Preparations and precautions to take in case of a statutory power outage

November 11, 2022 Information Science Center

Please refer to the following for information on precautions and preparations you should take regarding information system devices during a statutory power outage.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Statutory power outages can cause equipment failures.
The cause of the failure is an overcurrent caused by an overvoltage that occurs when power is restored.
Faults usually occur in equipment directly connected to the power supply, but equipment connected indirectly may also fail.
Also, when power is restored, dust and dirt on the contacts can cause a short circuit.

In the event of a power outage due to statutory power outage or inspection, we recommend that you check the following items and implement measures.
Using surge protection equipment such as a UPS is also effective against unexpected overvoltage and overcurrent caused by lightning strikes, etc.

[Items to check]
- Check whether the equipment has surge protection.
- If the equipment does not have surge protection, please take measures such as installing equipment that provides surge protection or unplugging the power to the equipment before a power outage.

[Advance measures and procedures]
?Introduce a UPS or similar device to protect against overcurrent. A UPS is also effective in preventing input voltage fluctuations. We recommend using one.
-If the power outage lasts for a long period of time, also shut down the UPS and any devices connected to the UPS.
?Shut down the equipment before the power outage (if the equipment requires a shutdown).
- Unplug the power cord from the outlet. It is advisable to also remove any connections that may be affected (such as Ethernet).
- Install a power strip with lightning protection (surge protection) function.
- Using multiple power strips, etc. can cause overvoltage and overcurrent when power is restored, and can also cause voltage fluctuations.
- Back up your data in case your equipment breaks down.
- If the power circuit has a breaker, turn it off.
- Regularly clean off dust and other debris from the contacts, and avoid using deteriorated power strips and cables.
?Create a procedure manual for procedures to follow in the event of a statutory power outage.

[Measures and procedures after power is restored]
- Make sure that the power supply is stable before connecting and starting up the equipment.
- If an abnormality occurs when power is restored, identify the route by which the abnormality occurred and eliminate the cause.
